L’Oreal announced at an event in Paris on Wednesday that the company will launch a new line brand that represents a breakthrough in professional hair dye — Botanea.

Botanea is a vegan, 100% plant-based hair dye collection. “We’ve managed to marry naturalness with a professional result without compromising on either point,” Marion Brunet, head of the L’Oreal Professional brand, said at the launch event.

Natural hair dyes are known for having limited color choices, and colors with a very low-intensity. It has also been a challenge for chemists to come up with natural alternatives for ammonia and other chemicals that were thought necessary in hair dye, to achieve certain looks. The team at L’Oreal says Botanea solves these issues. The collection is sourced from three plants found in India.

Botanea will be available in salons in Europe in 2018. See it in the photo above, in packaging that looks apothecary-inspired.
